Here’s a cocktail and a pick-me-up. That’s our kind of beverage!
The best part about this cocktail (besides its great taste) is that it is so easy to remember: Equal parts of four ingredients: coffee, milk, vodka, spiced simple syrup.
Ingredients
For the Chai Simple Syrup:
1 small cinnamon stick
3 cloves
3 peppercorns
5-10 cardamom pods, crushed lightly
1 star anise
1 cup water
½ cup sugar
½ cup honey or maple syrupFor the Martini:
1-ounce espresso or strong coffee
1-ounce milk
1-ounce vodka
1-ounce chai simple syrupInstructions
First, make the Chai-spiced simple syrup. (This recipe will give you more than what you need, and it's not a problem to dream up additional uses for it: add a squeeze to your morning coffee to spice up the start of the day, add to your iced tea for a complex flavor, or drizzle over vanilla ice cream.)
Simmer all of the syrup ingredients in a small pot for about 15 minutes, until the simple syrup is well-infused. Strain and cool. Transfer to a jar or container where it will keep in the fridge for several weeks.
Make the cocktail: add equal parts of the four ingredients: coffee, milk, vodka, spiced simple syrup. Put everything in a cocktail shaker with plenty of ice and shake, shake, shake!
Serve over ice on a hot day. We like to garnish with coffee beans or star anise for beauty points.
