Happy Hour Sip & Nibble: Garden Party & Tomato Tart

Cook it up, Shake it up with Hipcooks! In this lively Livestream class, Happy Hour Sip & Nibble: Garden Party & Tomato Tart, we’ll all make 2 summertime favorites: a crispy Tomato and Basil Tart, and a refreshing cocktail, the Garden Party. Then, go to your back deck, kick your feet up, and enjoy a delightful afternoon with your Sip & a Nibble. It’s Happy Hour!
The cocktail will get you pokin’ around in your garden (or tempt you for a stroll around the neighborhood — always a nice thing to do.
Here’s what to have on hand to get ready for class
For the Garden Party cocktail:
gin (or vodka if you prefer)
a handful of fresh mint, or a mint tea bag
1 cup of sugar
a stalk of fennel (with fronds if possible)
optional but fun: a few edible flowers like sunflower or black-eyed Susan petals, pea shoots, borage, nasturtium flowers, rose petals — just make sure they are free of pesticides. Not sure what is edible? Show us in class and we’ll help you!
optional: a splash seltzer water
cocktail shaker with muddler and strainer (or a makeshift shaker, like a mason jar with a lid and mesh strainer)
For the Tomato Tart:
1 sheet puff pastry, thawed
1 pound(ish) tomatoes, thinly sliced
a handful basil leaves
Staples: olive oil & salt(Maldon or flaky sea salt a plus!) and pepper
baking sheet (lined with parchment if you have it) and oven pre-heated to 375°F.
a rolling pin and a floured worksurface (you can hack a wine bottle for a rolling pin)
Looks amazing, doesn’t it? Wait ’til you taste it. It’s the best of summer in one afternoon.
