My amazing friends Misha and Vicki Collins have come out with a cookbook, The Adventurous Eaters Club. It shows families how to become mealtime adventurers so kids can build lifelong relationships with real food. How very Hipcooks of them! I like to imagine it’s influenced by the many meals we shared together. It’s all about no-stress, measurement-free, put the health and fun into cooking. Involving kids in the kitchen is the way to do it!

“Old-school” Hipcooks
Only the most “old-school” of Hipcooks fans will remember the very first Hipcooks location, hosted at the Collins’ house in Los Angeles. What a deal: If I packed the fridge full of tasty treats, I could host Hipcooks out of their house. Thus launched my career with Hipcooks. At the same time, Misha landed a starring role in the hit series Supernatural. Here’s me & Mish outside the Silverlake house, where it all started. (Do you remember the first Hipcooks location? Comment below!)
Kids in the kitchen
Now that Hipcooks is super and (kinda) famous, and Misha is super-famous, we’re joining our unstoppable forces once again! Kudos to you, Misha and Vicki! I can’t wait to turn the tables and invite you into the Hipcooks kitchens to show off some of these amazing recipes. Fill the fridge for me? Or better yet, let’s make our kids do it! Lucia, like your little ones, is an extreme kitchen enthusiast and loves to come up with her own recipes. I host some of the better ones here on this blog: Lucia’s roasted carrots with feta & mint and Lucia’s Yummus recipe.
What’s your favorite way of involving little hands in the kitchen? Comment below for the chance to win this amazing book! Buy it on Amazon here.

I like to involve my 3-year-olds in cooking by giving them some of the things I’m chopping and a kid-safe knife so they can prep with me. They also love to eat can’t shredded cheese we might be using, so they get little piles of that when we use it.
“Chop Chop, Hand on Top!” That’s what I said to little Lucia, and now she handles a Chef’s knife with ease. Thanks for your comment, Angela, I LOVE that you get cooking with your kiddos! Monika
Love this! I adore the Hipcooks-esque question when my kids ask how much of something to put in ‘How much do YOU think?’ and let them feel their way into it (not with baking;). The freedom in your classes distills quite well down to the kiddos!
Thank you for your comment, Maria!
I love letting them layer things in pans, shape things, and stir things up!

Yessss! Chop chop hand on top is the mantra in the kitchen anytime I have my helpers. I set them up Hipcooks style w a little aprons, duplicate round cutting boards, and a single chefs knife. Picking the garden herbs, spreading out their loot and chopping vigorously gets them fired up about their dinner.
I’d love to win a copy of this cookbook!
While I’m no expert by any means, I’ve always loved coming to Hipcooks and get excited when I get to try something different and see what works. This cookbook seems like an amazing way to try some new recipes and get creative in the kitchen!

I was a picky eater when I was a kid so what this is trying to do really speaks to me. What a great idea for a book.

Kids love helping out in the kitchen. When my son was about 2 years old, he loved sitting on the kitchen counter and “helped” mommy cook. I would give him a handful of vegetables or noodles to put into the pot, or a wooden spoon to stir. We had a great time together. He is a young adult now and associates cooking as something fun and enjoyable to do.
I love stories like that, Sandy! Congrats!

We’re mostly vegetarian, and we’ve been lucky that our kids (now 6 & 9) have pretty wide palates. When our oldest was 3, we were living in Chicago, and watching her pull kale, collards & chard from the garden and eat them raw was quite a treat; I didn’t grow up growing food, nor taste any of those until well into adulthood.
Ironically we have less of a vegetable garden since moving to California (I’m still learning how to navigate the clay soil!) but the kids continue to be adventurous food-wise, especially when they get to make their own. Breakfast pizzas (pita with peanut butter, coconut, sunflower seeds, apples, honey, and whatever else we have on hand), black bean bowls (rice, edamame, red cabbage, beans, cheese, corn, salsa & guac), and make your own pizza (with pineapple, artichokes & olives(!)) are on their lists of favorites, and they love coming up with restaurant-style menus for us to choose from. Our next adventure – actually letting them near the stove…we’re still at the assembly (not ‘cooking’) stage of food prep.
I’d love to check out the book; please add me to the contest!
Alison, I agree! It’s a big jump for adults to allow kids to “play with fire.” Prep (even handling knives), recipe-making, even handling machinery (oh, the hard-working KitchenAid has seen some creativity!): all of that was easier for me than the stove.
I remember the first time Lucia made breakfast in bed. Since I’m a single mom, I ran down to the kitchen to check that she had shut off the gas. Turns out, she made my tea with water from the tap. (Phew, she was only about 6!) She’s 10 now, and as much as I try to be vigilant, I’ve got to let her do her thing.
I need to dig up some great Lucia cooking videos and post them here: sharing our kids cooking encourages us all. Thanks so much for sharing!- Monika
I love teaching my soon to be niece how to bake Mexican desserts so she is able to learn about a new culture.
