HipKids Afterschool Special: Virtual Cooking Class Program
Give us your age 10+ child, two times a week after school, and we’ll ignite their excitement and autonomy in the kitchen!
Hi Busy Hip-Parents, Do you have an aspiring Hip-chef in your household? Hipcooks is introducing a new program just for you, the HipKids Afterschool Special.
Get your kid out of your hair and into the kitchen! Our mission is to create a foundation of healthy, nutritious, and inspired eating with recipes the kids will use again and again. We’ll teach kids to use the kitchen autonomously: using equipment safely (knives, flame, blenders, food processors, and other tools) and how to clean up afterward.
Hipcooks Teacher Claire will meet with kids virtually 2 times per week for 90-minute sessions for an interactive, step-by-step experience. Each week has a theme and will include basic skills that build throughout the week. Each class has the kids eating: from “Snack Attack” recipes that they can quickly prepare for themselves, to “Showstoppers” they’ll share with the family!
How it works, in a Nutshell
- Parents sign up kids on a weekly basis. Cost is $40 per week. Need to skip a week? No problem! Meet times are Tuesdays and Thursdays, 3:30pm – 5pm PT. Video recordings are available for missed classes.
- Parents and kids sign our contract: parents are aware we’re teaching with knives, flame, and other potentially hazardous kitchen equipment. Classes are recorded. Kids agree to a code of conduct.
- After signing up, parents receive a simple shop and equipment list for the week.
- Kids cook their way: recipes are adaptable to accommodate allergies and food preferences.
HipKids Afterschool Special Program Details and FAQ
Age of Participants
This program is for children aged 10 – 13. If you have a child that is younger than 10 that would like to participate, please email hipkids@hipcooks.com for permission to sign up before you do so. If you have an older child who would like to participate, that’s fine: as long as they’re aware that younger kids will be with us. We may decide to open another session for kids 14+, depending on interest (so email us!)
Multiple Kids, One Household
If you have two children in the 10 -13 age range (or have permission from Hipcooks for kids outside the age range), you are welcome to join the class “per computer.” The kids need to understand and agree that they’ll share some tasks and double-up on others. For instance, each child can practice knife skills with their own cutting board and knife, but share 1 pot on the stove. If kids in one household are insisting on independence, then parents should sign up each child separately. Each child would need to work in separate areas of the kitchen on their own devices (one with the volume turned off).
How to Sign up, Signing up for the Series, Gifting HipKids
We’re keeping it simple: sign up for whatever week of HipKids classes you like! As HipKids classes fill, we’ll add new ones (on future dates or at different days of the week.) Many parents indicated they would like to sign up for the whole series — thank you for your enthusiasm! At this time we do not have a series-signup available but are hoping to do so in the future.
Gifting a class (or multiple classes) is easy. Simply add them to your cart. You can forward the class confirmation to the Lucky HipKid family. Many of you have graciously indicated that you’d like to contribute a little more money to fund a child that would like to attend this program. As our way of giving back, Hipcooks will match your donation dollar for dollar. Please email hipkids@hipcooks.com to learn how you can donate to our Scholarship Fund, or to apply. It’s easy!
Class size is limited to 20 participants. We’ll add more classes to our schedule as we fill up, so please spread the word!
All signups are final: we cannot offer refunds or makeup classes for the HipKids program at this time.
In addition, we’ll require a Code of conduct and Acknowledgment signatures from both kiddos and parents so that we can ensure a safe and successful program. (This will be available to preview shortly.)
Sessions are on Zoom, and will be Recorded
We’ll meet twice a week on Zoom, and sessions will be recorded (so that latecomers or anyone missing a class can catch up on their own time.) HipKids Class Recordings will not be shared publically, but will be shared privately will all class participants. While the class recordings will primarily highlight the teacher, children will be visible from time to time.
Shop/Prep and Getting my Kids ready for Class!
(From Nov 1) Within 24 hours of signing up, Parents will receive a Shop and Prep List, so that their kiddos can have all they need for a successful session. We’ll send our Contract for Parents and Kids, and when that paperwork is in, we’ll send the Zoom Link to join the class!
If your household or child has any dietary restrictions, please let us know. Additionally, we’ll include substitutions for common allergens in our Shop Lists. The silver lining in cooking virtually is that it’s easy to substitute in your own kitchens and tailor-make food to each individual’s liking.
Are HipKids Classes available as Private Sessions?
In short, yes! If you have a group of similar-aged kids you’d like to unite virtually, email us and we’ll get you going. Be it for one class or a series.
