Start off Cinco de Mayo with our Mexican Hot Chocolate Smoothie. It’s healthy, delicious, and will kick start your day!
Health benefits of our Mexican Hot Chocolate Smoothie
In a nutshell, it’s:
- Diary-free and sugar-free
- Packed with protein
- Loaded with antioxidants (and superfoods)
- Sprinkled with spices that control your appetite, improve your circulation, and more
- Filling, satisfying, and delicious!
But we had you at chocolate, right? The health benefits of cacao are fantastic: it gives energy, improves memory, reduces heart disease, sheds fat, increases immunity, and boosts your bliss!
This healthy chocolate smoothie will keep you feeling full and satisfied for quite a while. It’s thick, protein-rich and creamy from cashews. It’s sweetened with banana and vanilla. A touch of spices makes it sassy. Orange peel for vitamin C and well, chocolate and orange love one another. And because we love to garnish a smoothie, we put some healthy cacao nibs on top to crunch on.
More add-ons
The fun thing about smoothie-making is the continual adding on of some ingredients (with perhaps the taking away of others), depending on what you’re going for.
Nice: Get your greens on
If you’d like to sneak in even more health, toss in a handful of greens (like a handful of spinach or kale). The intensity of flavors in this smoothie will mask the greens entirely, so why not boost your smoothie and get your greens in?
Naughty: Jack me up!
If you’re dragging in the morning (or afternoon) and you want an extra boost: toss in a shot of espresso or coffee. Now there’s a healthy, delicious pick-me-up!

Ingredients
1 cup raw, unsalted cashews
1 peeled ripe banana
3 cups water
3 heaping teaspoons cacao
a dash of vanilla bean paste
a dash of cinnamon
a dash of cayenne pepper
a few scrapes of orange peel, zested with a Microplane
garnish: cacao nibs
Instructions
Soak the cashews in the water for at least 15 minutes (or overnight) before blending. You can do this right in the blender base if you like.
Add the all the ingredients and whizz away. Give it a taste and adjust the flavors if you need to.
Serve garnished with cacao nibs, if desired.
