Time for another stiff drink, Hipcooks? The Sage Rush rushes to the rescue! Pssst: Have you heard? It’s my favorite cocktail. I mean, they’re all my favorite. But this one is my real, real favorite.
A few simple ingredients make the magic
That’s my kinda recipe. And my kinda cocktail. Just a few ingredients are in the Sage Rush, but it is so uniquely wonderful.
You Californian Hipcooks have it made in the (not) shade. You’ve got citrus galore. I’ve got both grapefruit and lemons leftover from pilfering my sister’s tree when I was last there. You remember, way back when. When we took airplanes and got to hug and kiss all our loved ones. This drink is most awesome with grapefruit. But if all you’ve got are lemons, go for it anyway. It’s still yummy.
Sage is imperative — it’s a Sage Rush, after all. No sage, no problem. Earn your cocktail by walking a block or 2 around your ‘hood, and you’ll spot some sage sooner or later. It grows rampant all over CA, OR and WA. No sage? Make yours a Good Ol Greyhound.
Make mine a double
Hey! I’ve got something to celebrate! My healthy parents made it off their cruise ship yesterday and are back home. My extended family is recovering well from the Coronavirus, and over the hump. Double-Cheers to that.
6 large sage leaves (double up if they're small)
2 teaspoons sugar
1 lemon, cut into 4 wedges
4 ounces gin
4 ounces grapefruit juice
Put the sage leaves, sugar, and lemon wedges into the glass of a cocktail shaker and crush them with about a dozen determined strokes of a cocktail muddler. Add the gin, grapefruit juice, and top with ice cubes. Shake, shake, shake! Strain and serve straight-up, or in a small glass with one king cube.
